Dissolution
Collaborative Studies (8/07) |
|
In the interest of on-going research and science, several key aspects of dissolution testing are being evaluated, including the quality testing of topical formulations, the effects of vibration on dissolution testing, and the variables inherent in vessel manufacture and geometry. Please contact Royal Hanson (rhanson@hansonresearch.com) for further information.
Topicals
Hanson is participating in a USP collaborative study validating test methods for release rate testing of topicals (creams, gels and ointments). The first phase of this program evaluated the vertical diffusion cell (or “Franz cell”) – see
USP Pharmacopeial Forum, Vol. 32(5), p. 1590. The second phase is now evaluating other appropriate methods, such as the “Ointment cell” and “Enhancer cell”.
Vibration
Hanson is participating in a FDA collaborative study evaluating the effect of vibration on dissolution test results. Using NCDA #2 Prednisone tablets and a suitable electronic accelerometer to measure vibration on the lab bench and on the vessel plate, a series of collaborative tests are being run to gain meaningful information on the effects of vibration on dissolution test data.
Vessel
It is recognized that variations in dissolution vessel geometry may have significant impact on test results – see
Dissolution Technologies, Vol. 14(1), p. 28. Takao Scientific Glass (Kyoto, Japan), has introduced a precision vessel with remarkable close tolerance in the glass cylinder, flange and hemispherical bottom. Hanson is working with Takao to evaluate vessel applications and industry requirements.
